Girls in Mustaches

Can you tell someone is grumpy? We had just gotten back from an impromptu vacation (that sounds better than 'we didn't plan a single thing until the very last minute') and were all bit short on sleep. Molly cheered up when I suggested she hug her sister.

The night before our trip, I thought I'd sift through my knits to see if there was a good one for making myself a quick t-shirt. When Molly spotted the mustache fabric, she insisted it was impossible for her to go on vacation without a mustache dress.

So, one dress turned into two, and, for good measure, I added in a gray mustache t-shirt for big sister (Ottobre 1-2010-33).

The dresses are the super-quick Skater Dress pattern from Kitschy Coo.

We took a 3-day trip up the North Shore, on the Minnesota side of Lake Superior. There's nothing like taking a trip with 5 kids to make you realize that your regular life isn't nearly as exhausting as you thought it was!

Gooseberry Falls in the background.

What it looks like when parents "hike" with 4 year olds.
Since you're wondering, I'm wearing an unblogged Ottobre sweatshirt, modified Ottobre shorts, and a hand-drafted t-shirt.

An anchor in Duluth, Minnesota.

The famous Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth.

Roasting marshmallows around the fire in preparation for making S'mores.

S'more consumption in an Ottobre sweatshirt.

S'more [a contraction of "some more", I think]:
Roasted marshmallow
and
Hershey's chocolate
sandwiched between two graham crackers.

Hiking, hiking, hiking. The dizzying view is below Cascade Falls.

Fake consumption of an impressive mushroom.

 A stilt sandpiper.

The Scandinavian-infused tourist attractions are humorous. Above, Molly's ferocious Viking heritage is coming through.
Lunch.

On the rocky shore of Lake Superior. The kids built a land (pebble) bridge out to a rock. It doesn't look like much, but it was no small effort for them to pile up all those rocks.

Canoeing on a shallow, lazy river.

Enjoying the sand on the world's largest sandbar (so they say).
Although the water was frigid (a park ranger told us it was 45 degrees), there were a few dozen people swimming.

A cedar waxwing.

  2. What beautiful pictures! I love the dresses too! I have that blue mustache fabric for one of my girls and we haven't decided which pattern to use yet.

    1. Thanks! The mustaches are a lot of fun. I'm glad I used it and didn't let it sit in my stash for too long (:

    2. Joy, I see that this pattern goes up to a size 7/8 but do you know if it runs a little big? One of my girls is in a 9 RTW size, but I don't see a pattern for this dress any bigger other than the adult version.

    3. Hi Shirley - I think it runs a little big. For both of my girls, I went a size smaller than their RTW size ... i.e. I made a size 3/4 for my girl in size 5/6 RTW, and a size 4/5, for my size 6/7 girl. The older one's shrunk enough that it started to look tight in the shoulders....but she's really closer to a size 8.

The pattern IS multisized, so scaling it up wouldn't be too much work. I may try the largest size for my 9yo girl this fall...

  3. Cute dresses. There have been lots of skater dress in blogland lately, and I must confess, I prefer them on children to adults.

    1. Thanks! I'm glad I tried the kids' version of the dress - it's nice to have an easy-to-whip-up basic like this.

  5. What a lovely trip! Lake Superior is so pretty. I've always loved going up there (although on the WI side lol). I must try Sven & Ole's !!! being quite Norwegian myself.

The kids looked like they had a blast and the smores look yummy. I love how the mustache apparel all goes together :D

And vacations are wonderful, and exhausting. I can't imagine having 5 little ones as the 2 I have are ... fun.

    1. Sven & Ole's is in Grand Marais (MN side). I haven't been on the Wisconsin side, except just into Superior (looking for some relatives' graves, believe it or not).

  6. Those are two very gorgeous girls. Looks like such a fun trip. That's the sort of trip they have memories of forever. I can't imagine traveling with five. We are going on a quick beach weekend with baby girl in a couple of weeks and you should see the list of stuff we have to pack...

    1. Good luck packing for your trip! I remember how much stuff babies require. It's definitely easier in that regard once they're 3 or 4. But then they're mobile and can talk, ha ha.

  7. OK your children should be tired after that trip! It looks fabulous. But making clothes the night before leave? I think you must be very organised. I am usually panic laundering at that point. Anyway, cute dresses! Also, my 13 yo has a pair of socks with mustaches printed on them and I have never really understood why mustaches. Clearly they are a worldwide phenomenon. However, we don't have graham crackers and I had never heard of s'mores. I feel quite deprived now ;)

    1. I'm definitely not very organized, hehe. I think the last-minute nature of the trip meant we threw stuff into suitcases and I had no time to fret about it.

I'm truly sorry to hear you've been deprived of s'mores. The one consolation is that they are so messy - especially for kids.

    1. Thanks - it was fun. I always want to go up there at least once a year, even if it's just a quick trip.
