State of the Wardrobe Address

Another year has rolled around, bringing my Handmade Wardrobe Quest to its 6th completed year. (You might also call this a nerdy 6 years of data collection...)

Last year, at the five year mark, I tallied up my wardrobe to see my stats (because stats are almost as fun as patterns, you know.)

Originally, my goal was to avoid buying any clothes, except for underwear and knitted items. But eventually I realized, gee, I can make underwear! So, for better or for worse, with the exception of some underwear, a coat, and a jacket, I have stitched everything.

[RTW = Ready To Wear]

So how do the stats stack up?
Total Garments
Last year: 55% Handmade
                  45% RTW

This year: 61% Handmade
                  39% RTW

Total tops
Last year: 71% Handmade

This year: 77% Handmade
                23% RTW

Total Bottoms

                27% RTW

This year: 77% Handmade

  2. WooHoo!! I love seeing these posts. You are getting ever so closer to 80% and I'm thinking perhaps someday even more! Very impressive. I would be curious to know what pattern companies you sew from the most. I'm thinking Ottobre and Jalie - a handful of independent designers. I am all about the stats and spreadsheets :)
You've totally motivated me to go take inventory right now and get my #'s (though they will not be as impressive as yours this is my 3rd year. I know last year we were at like 35% or so...

    1. I love the stats, too, ha! It's exciting to see one's work all graphed out, not just on hangers (:

I did post which pattern companies I sew from in my end of year post, but that doesn't show which patterns MY clothes are sewn from. I'll have to graph that. I did see that a full 25% of my wardrobe is Ottobre!

Now, I want to see your inventory (:

    2. LOL well mine is way less. I Kiela is at 41% (mostly Ottobre, Tayden and I are both at a tiny 18%. I can clearly see who I sew for most! As a middle school kid, Tayden is much more picky though. I hope to up my numbers this year.

    1. Thanks, Shirley! I collect the data, but I'm very grateful my husband makes all these graphs. If I did it, it would be very primitive, I suspect :)

  5. Looks like you need to sew some sleeveless knit tops and shorts.;) Just teasing! I'm always impressed with your breakdowns. It's neat to see what categories are sewn the most!

    1. Hahaha! It's that little stack of identical knit tanks that I bought at G.H. Bass years ago that's throwing me for a loop. They refuse to wear out and I can't just throw them away for the sake of my stats. Or can I....
